Although named Brown Pot, which may conjur up thoughts of drabness, the main colour here has hints of teracotta and is visually very appealing. Likewise the blue / turquoise circle allows Caulfield to give a convincing pot shape whilst using the same colour - even with the absence of line on the lower right, which is filled in by the brain of the viewer. The spash of yellow hints at a light source from the top right, as do the sharp black shadows. Once again with just a few simple shapes and well chosen colours, Patrick Caulfield has been able to depict an everyday item as an object of beauty.
